Comfort/Sonata/OMO/Old Airport Road

I passed my Class 3 driving licenseon 2002, after that i had not driven any car, passed my TVL at the age of 30, wanted to have a taste of driving a car but cannot afford buying one.
Initially wanted to start driving taxi when i was 30, but was not encouraged to do so, I was on and off out of jobs, the last job i had was a technical job only lasted about 1 year, after that i stopped working and play mmorpg - World of Warcraft, that lasted for 1 year+, recently i decided to drive taxi, and now was encouraged to.So i was considering which company to join and which taxi to drive, browsing thru internet, and watching taxi on the road, i kinda like the Sonata taxi, it gives me a comfortable feeling, the curves of the car made me very much wanted that i choose it. When i went to comfort , i askedto be a new hirer and wanted the Sonata, the staff recommendCrown to me saying there are some incentives if driveCrown, but if i dont consider driving manual gear, then just take Sonata.
I didnt even know Sonata was an auto gear car, i dont have much car knowledge as well.
I have attended a taxi meter/MDT course, and a briefing for new Sonata car. The orientation course was scheduled to be 29 Sep09, have yet to attend.....i got alot of un-answered questions....it was when i found this forum then i managed to clear alot of doubts.

24 Sep 09,12noon , i go 10 Penjuru road collect taxi.....new to everything, had not handled car since 7 years ago....dennis and jack came with me to show me their support. Dennis owned a car, so i asked him, which one is accelerator and which is brake pedal.....he was shocked i asked this....how am i able to handle the car.....if i dont even know the basics.
Everything happened so fast, i dont even know how to do the daily check like coolant water/Windscreen wiper/Engine oil. Collected 3 inspection date, Comfort-TVL, no road tax given, was told to collect 3 days later, any fine just take it and bring it to them. Everyone inspected their car, test drive and left, then i realise i am the last taxi left....i did a test drive and managed to do fine. Drove to the nearest petrol kiosk and release tyre pressure to 220-230. Whenwe are about to leavethe petrol kiosk, i couldnt start my car, and all the warning lights lighted up, so i thought car got problem, dennis tried to start the car and the car started....so i insert the key and turn, all the meter have illumination , i thought it already started, so i got to turn the key all the way clockwise and hear the engine start....
Then drove to Ubi CDGE to top up. Found the fuel button press, the cover can open for top up. Also learnt how to open the car boot and front boot. Then i drove jack home, and dennis home, by then it was already 7pm, when i was driving out, got flagged and receivedmy 1stpax near tampines ave 5, a lady going somewhere opp. kerbau hotel, i set my GPS and managed to find the place. And then my 2nd pax , girl and boy, hopped in from kerbau hotel going to kiliney road, i missed a turn and went to orchard road, then when i managed to enter the correct path, ahead i can see kiliney road, but pax ask me turn left, then go back into orchard road again, they alighted before i was about to turn into orchard road. I was feeling tired and wanna go back home to rest, then i set mdt status to busy, when i was about to reach home, passing by leisure park around national stadium, got flagged and pax, girl and boyasked to go Woodland then Sembawang, when the girl alighted, she gave a bag to me, saying it does not belong to her, so its left behind by the 2nd pax. Then i began to drive back home again, was halfway reaching home then got flagged and 4th pax want go woodlands....got $67 in total from 7pm to 12midnite. Set mdt to busy, very tired, got many ppl flag along the way......got pax, no energy to drive....head home to rest.....

Being new on the road, I'm sure u'll get pax telling u destinations u've never heard before.
Don't be shy, juz tell them u r new and ask them for guide. Most pax are understanding.
Especially for a new cabbie, pax are mostly co-operative but of coz, sometimes u do
get those nasty types.
My one advise to u is 'Never let the last unhappy incident affect your next pax'.
Cheers and good luck.

Was there as well on the same date/time to collect the Sonata. Did spotted someone asking the man-in-charge about driving the Auto car but do not know if you are that person. I ask about the difference between N and P mode.

No need to tell pax we are new cabbies, pax board cab and can see some of plastic protective sheet still intact and the smell of it as well.

The first thing i wanna do is to return the lost and found items, woke up on 7am, checked the forum and was guided to return to police post or comfort, decided to return to comfort but dunno where, i supposed it was at sin ming, not sure if other place can return? I read about the lost and found stuffs and found out if items are not returned within 24hrs, will get 5 demerit points, so i headed to sin ming lost and found counter to return items, i received a copy of the report. By the time i settled my worries, it was already 8:30am. Then i began my new day.

Pax flagged at bus stop near toa payoh lor 6, wanna go revenue house, asked pax go by which way, she say PIE - thomson road.I used GPS and managed to tracked revenue house. I was looking at my GPS and about to turn to the PIE around toa payoh lor 6, somehow i missed the turn and loop back to toa payoh lor 6 again, the Turn was tricky gotta keep right then can enter PIE, also have oncoming traffic that will cut into your path in order to go toa payoh lor 6.

Pax : Which way are u going?
Me : Toa payoh lor 6 - PIE
Pax : We are back to where we are earlier.
Me : Sorry i am new, not too sure about the way.
Pax : You should have told me earlier, i could direct you.

Then managed to turn into PIE-but missed the Thomson road exit and went further up to Upper Thomson road.

Pax : I thought i say exit Thomson road....
Me : Sorry missed the turn....
We can see Thomson road on the opposite of the road....
Pax : Aiyah....u turned into here, i dunno where to go liao....
Me : I'll make a U-turn..
After 4-5 traffic lights then found the U-turn.....
I tried to appease the customer saying u dont have to pay in full.
After the U-turn, she gave directions and reached Revenue house.
Meter is 9.40+peak hour surcharge about 15.40.
Pax give me 10.
Pax : This is more than what u should have get...

Lesson learnt : Usually pax who flag cab are running late...also risk of getting fined for stopping near bus stop. To turn out to PIE from toa payoh lor 6, gotta keep right! Thomson road gotta keep left after turning to PIE.

Thur 24Sep- 4 pax
Fri 25Sep - 15 pax
Sat 26Sep - 15 pax
Sun 27 Sep -22 pax

1st time to airport
I went to airport and wanna experience , dunno where to queue, found taxi queueing and joined the queue. It was around 10pm. Only waited about 10-15mins, it happens few flights just alighted and the F1 is hot in town. Pax wanna go Alexandra road, when we reached alexandra road, pax also dunno where the hotel is,so i requested paxwe stopped by the road and let me track using GPS, i type Alexandra, cant find anything, GPS no result shown. Then pax show me his SMS from hp, Alessiandra....lol so lucky it was only 15m away from where we stopped.
Note : There is a hotel/place/condo called Alessiandra along Alexandra Road.

2nd time to airport
It was 4am , i headed to airport, very quiet there, no queues, i was lost and dunno where to queue. After 2-3 laps to T1 arrival, i stopped at the spot where i remembered where airport pax queued up, those yellow box about 10. I took the Box 1. Only Box 3-4 have taxi and i dont see any queue. Then got few TU came to me, and said, there is a queue , 2-3 taxis infront of me queueing. Then i drive out and try to find the queue, went to departure/basement/arrival ~ 6-7 laps....still cannot find. I can see the queue but cant get to where the queue is, by the time i found the correct path, already have about 20 taxi infront me.

Lesson learnt : The correct path is turn right after entering T1Arrival. There is a straight-blocked-barrier, and left(i took the left turn at least 6-7 times.) The right turn is not visible, covered by bushes.

1st timeExpo+Cheapo pax
2 lady took my cab around Sat 6pm. They know i am new coz my car smells new. They asked got discount or not....i said sure sinced i explained i dunno way and they willing to direct me.Lady A gives good direction and alighted around tampines. By thenthe fare is around 12 with expo+peak hr surcharge.Lady B want to go Bedok south ave 1. I was waiting for her directions as she said she would direct me. My GPS asked me to turn left to Bedok South Ave 3, but she didnt ask me to turn and we went to Bedok north road, i wanted to U-turn back to enter Bedok south ave 3, but she say this way also can. I followed the road Bedok north road-ave 1-3....it was jammed and meter keeps ticking. Then finallyreach bedok south ave 1. Meter fare about 12, surcharge about 7. She ask me how much i wanna charge, i said 15.....but she only wanted to give 12 and she says its 12 all she got. And she quite contradicting keep saying dont wanna pay me less , i'll lose out, but still insist on paying 12. She said usually only 12. I accepted and 12 and moved on. Lady B labelled as cheapo.

Lesson learnt : Sometimes gotta trust your own instinct, if i had make the U-turn and turned into Bedok south ave 3, could have avoid the jam and save both the pax time and our PRECIOUS time. Dont always listen to pax, especially those half bucket one, act to know.

Question : In this case......would u listen to pax and continue towards bedok north road or make a U-turn back to bedok south ave 3? What are the expected disputes?

Yeah i did met goodpax, know good directions, willing to direct, and some i wanted to tip them for good gesture but they tipped me instead to the nearest dollar. Also met difficult pax...i try not to let me affect me, and take it as a lesson learnt....but sometimes its hard to swallow the humble pie, and the images of unhappy incident keep flashing in my head....that is why i started this thread and dump my rubbish here lol.....as well as sharing what i gone thru and asking and clearing doubts.

Thanks for well-wishing. Reading up the forums had benefit me clearing most of my doubts, but i guess i'll ask along the way when i encounter some situations....being omo and very new to car and taxi driving, i'll need more guidance in future. Would post as the times comes along.

Thanks.

Right, bro acekang, you have come to a right place here at taxiuncle.com where new found buddies are willing to help you on the way.

My advice to you is also to get a walkie talkie.

Very touching, makes me remember my starting days....

Acekang, well done!!! Keep it up.

I had been using GPS for couple months but now no more, because if we rely on GPS or pax direction then our brain never spin, when facing horrible pax... harhah... die die.

My suggestion for you, after searching via GPS, memorize roads around the designation, e.g. read the map from GPS when stop infront of red light.... quick quick memorize...Bedok Rd, next is Ave3, next is Ave2, next is Ave1 also can go ECP, if I want to go Bedok... how?
After reading, off the screen otherwise your learning path will be very long and unsafe to be disturbed while you're driving.

P.S. disable speedcam alert, mute speaker don't let those "turn right in 300m" thing disturb you.

I too am also using GPS though it nearly play me out a couple of times. The thing here is that you need to know the major roads and agar-agar the promixity of the destination so the damn GPS dun sent you to holland. I depend a lot on the voice guide and visual too that prompt you when you are near to turn. I find that very useful. But a lot is also based on asking the pax for directions and most are very kind and helpful lot.
