SBS bus crashes into Toyota, killing driver

An SBS Transit bus lost control and crashed into a Toyota in Bishan, killing the driver and injuring the passenger in the car.

As the SBS bus was out of service at the time, no passengers were on board.

A STOMPer who witnessed the accident said that bus seemed to be speeding. "The car was spun around and the bus' rear wheels were still spinning," posted the netizen.

The driver of the Toyota, who was in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The female passenger was taken to the hospital. Her legs were swollen and she was experiencing pain in her right arm.

The bus was allegedly speeding to merge into a slip road. But it lost control and crashed into the Toyota across the road divider.

The Toyota was waiting at a red light at the time of the accident.

White paint from the boot of the Toyota was found all over the road, the kerb and the grass nearby, said witness Mr Edward Gay, 70, in a Straits Times report.

"We are very sorry that this has happened," says Ms Tammy Tan, SBS Transit's senior vice-president for corporate communications. She also added that their immediate focus is to help the injured.

She added, "We are in touch with the passenger of the private car to find out how she is and to see how we can render assistance".

She also mentioned in the Straits Times report that they will be assisting the police with their investigations, as well as contacting the driver's family.

Netizens are upset and some alluded the recent accident to earlier ones that took place this year involving SBS buses, such as the case where eight passengers were hurt as SBS buses collided on the PIE.

Neitizen "kiplisch22" commented on STOMP saying, "Can the relevant authorities (LTA/Traffic Police) get to the bottom of this matter with urgency? This is NOT the FIRST case already! Many lives are at stake here! A bus-load of commuters is no joke if something even more serious were to happen."

Another netizen, Bananasxz, expressed her concern after reading about such accidents, "I take the bus almost everyday, but now that I've seen this article and other articles that STOMPers put up, I'm afraid I may never make it home one day."

SINGAPORE - A man reportedly knocked down his own 12-year-old son at a Hougang carpark yesterday when he accidentally reversed his car.

The incident happened at the carpark in front of Block 710 Hougang Avenue 2 at about 8.55pm.

According to a local website, the driver's slipper had gotten stuck on the accelerator, causing the car to reverse and hit the child.

A loud scream was heard from the boy, the website said.

Thereafter, eight men rushed to free the boy by lifting up the rear end of the car,

A witness told the website that the boy was safe and escaped with minor injuries.

The police said they received a call on Nov 29 at about 9pm requesting for assistance at Block 710 Hougang Ave 2.

The boy was sent to Kandang Kerbau Hospital in a conscious state. Police investigations are ongoing.

Why are bus drivers brazenly flouting the law? Another one caught beating red light
another_vehicle_beating_red_lights__this_time_a_bus-thumbnail.jpg

A SBS bus driver was spotted stopping at a red light, but drove off before the lights turned green. This is not the first incident of its kind in which public transport drivers acted recklessly.

Not long ago in late October, a SMRT bus driver was seen beating the red light outside Woodlands Regional Interchange.

A SBS bus and taxi driver were also seen acting recklessly with little regard for safety and traffic rules.

These are just a few of many incidents in which public transport drivers acted recklessly.

In the video sent in to STOMP by STOMPer Lim, the bus had stopped at a red light, but drove off before the light turned green.

Incoming cars approaching from the left can be seen stopping to give way to the bus.

This Ferrari bearing a Singaporean licence plate is believed to have crashed on Malaysia's Karak Highway on Nov 29 while travelling as part of a convoy of Ferraris.

The pictures were originally posted by a user on mycarforum.com, and contributed by STOMPer Rachel.

The photos show the wreckage of a red Ferrari tangled with the guardrails at the side of the road.

From the pictures, the road is also clearly wet with rain, which may have contributed to the accident.

S'porean family of six involved in Aussie car accident, 1 dead
blank.gif

SINGAPORE - An unexpected tragedy struck a Singaporean family of six on a holiday to Tasmania, Australia when the driver lost control of the van and crashed into a tree.

The impact injured five family members and killed a 55-year-old woman seated at the back of the van, Shin Min Daily News reported.

The car accident reportedly happened yesterday at about 1.30pm along the Arthur Highway at Copping in southeast Tasmania.

The six Singaporeans were riding a red sports utility vehicle when the 62-year-old driver turned a corner and somehow lost control of the vehicle.

According to Australian media reports, the van veered into a drain, hit the concrete surface of the drain and slid down a slope before slamming into a tree.

The powerful force of the crash killed the woman at the scene, reports said.

Out of the five people injured, three women aged 46, 50 and 58 were rushed to the Royal Hobart Hospital for treatment.

According to Shin Min, the three are still hospitalised. The driver and his 22-year-old front seat passengers suffered minor injuries.

The hospital told the reporter that the three are awake and in stable condition, but said it is unclear at this moment when they can be discharged.

Tasmania police are currently investigating the incident and are preparing a report for the coroner.

It is believed that the deceased wasn't wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

The local police are now looking for the occupants of a black sedan who went to the help of the crash victims but left before the police arrived.

The 5km stretch of road is said to be an accident prone area and the accidents that have occurred there have mostly been relatively serious, Shin Min reported.
