Robber attacks cabby then hijacks taxi He was caught after a police chase, reeking of alcohol. A DRUNKEN taxi passenger was arrested early Wednesday morning after attacking a cabbie, stealing his car and leading police on a high-speed chase along the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE).
The pursuit ended about three minutes after it began with the 35 year-old surrendering to officers along the AYE near the Hong Leong Garden shopping centre.
'He was very strong. I feared for my life', said the cabbie, who wanted to be known only as Mr Goh.
The 52-year-old part-time taxi driver said he picked up the man, who reeked of alcohol, at around 1 am.
'I realised he smelt of alcohol right after he got into the cab. But by then, it was too late to ask him to get out', said the father of three teenaged children.
'He was in a very bad mood and was shouting and scolding me in Hokkien', said Mr Goh.
The man became belligerent, damaged the car and punched Mr Goh in the face during a 10-minute rampage. The cabbie pulled over and fled the taxi, but left the keys in the ignition.
The passenger hopped into the driver's seat and sped away, but the car was equipped with a tracking device.
Police gave chase, with speeds reaching 110km/hour. When the man pulled over, officers described him as calm and cooperative. He failed a breathalyzer test and was arrested on the spot.
The experience has given Mr Goh second thoughts about driving a cab at night.
'I still feel scared when I think about what has happened. I'll be taking an indefinite break from cab driving', he said. -----------------------------------------0000000--------------------------------------- occupational hazards? bros who drive nite do be careful & alert on such paxs
