I REFER to recent media reports on passengers' complaints about the high taxi fares which have forced many to use public buses and trains over taxis during the recession.
With the possibility of a reduction in bus and train fares this year, something should be done about exorbitant taxi fares, so that passengers will be drawn once again to using taxis and the livelihood of cabbies will not be threatened.
The present taxi-fare system is complicated and confusing to both foreigners and locals.
This can create opportunities for dishonest cabbies to overcharge passengers, especially tourists.
Why can't a simple fare system be established by abolishing the long list of surcharges, which can be mind-boggling for locals and tourists?
Taking into consideration the existing economic situation in Singapore as well as the losses taxi drivers will incur with the abolition of these surcharges, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and taxi operators should start afresh by deciding on a fair and reasonable flat flag-down rate, including the usual distance charge for every kilometre.
The proposed flat flag-down rate, including the distance charge, should be realistic and attractively priced, taking into account fares charged by other public-transport operators.
If taxi surcharges are completely removed and fares fairly determined, it will force cabbies to work hard in order to make every minute count when they are on the road looking for passengers.
The problem of being unable to get a taxi before the late-night surcharge kicks in will be a thing of the past.
There is no better time than now to revert to a simple fare system with a downward revision in fare rates for the benefit of both passengers and taxi drivers.

Bro fairfare, this Mr. Nelson may willing to pay $10.00 flat flag down plus 20 cents per 200 meters for the 1st 10km and 20 cents per 150 meter thereafter, not cheap lei....

It is a problem of supply and demand. Always has been. Look at LTA satistics, number of taxis on the road has been increasing all this while and ridership has been falling...
Many years back, demand is greater that supply, but now it is the other way round, THERE ARE SIMPLY TOO MANY TAXIS ON THE ROAD!!!
There is nothing wrong with the fare structures, if the company where to reduce taci fares now, how are all the bros going to make ends meet with such low ridership???
Lower fares does not always equals more trips, higher fares does not equals less passenger also... People that are used to taking taxis will still take them... it is the cheapos that are complaining and these are the lot that we do not want also....
It seems like everyone is just trying to sweep dirt under the carpet!
If the company or gov wants to help cabbies, than there should be a quota on the ratio of passenger per taxi... This will ensure a constant supply of taxis to people that really need a taxis.
And if taxi fares are to be reduce, than the daily rental and diesel cost should be reduced significantly to offset whatever lost of income that the cabbie is suffering!
It is a fact that taxi fares is one of the lowest in the world given our country economy state and the type of vehicles been used as taxis, also our ratio of pax per taxi is one of the lowest in the world!
That is why our cabbies are all suffering and the coys are still making big profits!
Look at Australia and France and many other countries, their cabbies have a say in how many taxis should be allow on the road and not the company or gov that determine it.
Our taxi company are just car rental companies, they don't care about how much a cabbies earns because their profits is weighted against how many taxis they can rent out!
I fully agreee with dumping 'confusing surcharges and fares' and replace with a high flag down fare of $10/- and 0.30cts for every 100m traveled and 0.20cts for every 20 seconds waiting time. Very simple fare indeed and nobody will go to 'Airport , Expo and CBD ' Taxies will be everywhere evenly distributed without loong taxi que for pax but loong taxi que for cabs.Hahaha..... best solutions. Taxies will surely be united and there wont be rogue Cabbies.
Fully agree, even our top m also says, you pay peanuts you get monkey, so to ensure top quality people and services, you have to pay them highly....
So if every passenger wants first class taxi services, than pay first class prices...
Very simple! NO BUT about it....
Same principal applys to every trade and every services.
Even for buses, you pay a premium bus fare, you get premium bus services that doesn't stop at every busstop.
So taxi is also a premium public transport that bring you from your pickup point directly to your destination in total comfort, than pax should pay an even higher fare!
Yes ! and Airport Taxies shud strictly be airport taxies pick up ONLY at airport and send. No picking up elsewhere. Other Taxies can roam the streets and pick up anywhere and send to airport but cannot pick up at Airport. Hotel Taxies shud strictly be Limosines and every hotel cabby must take the Tourism certificate to station at hotels. $10/- flag down fare will make lazy buggers walk short distances... and those carrying shopping loads justifiably pay the higher fare. Handicap persons/ senior citizens can be given a discount. They should make me Minister of Taxi Transport..Hahaha.

Bro your idea reminds me of the time when i visited HK where different color can only go different places
In HK, TD loves having $15-$20 pax before fare increased (approx 2004) because about 2-street distance already $15 (SGD3.6). Now they love $18-$22 say that sweet gal age 18-22
When travelling in HK, HK$200 taxi fare is very common without toll/tunnel surcharge. From one end to another end pax pay $400+ easily seen (e.g. Stanley to CLK Airport; compare to SG Changi to Tuas.... fare is too much lower.
Furthermore, taxi ownership in HK is individual meaning TD pay installment to own a taxi, buying a license HK$1million 10 years ago and now completed installment, guess what? the license costs 4 HK millions today. Government can't anyhow increase numbers of taxi on the road, the government can of course increase prohibited zone (double yellow line) and 24-hour NO DROP OFF area along main/minor roads like SG CBD area. Interesting result I can see in HK nobody complain about taxi fare nor need to walk 500m after alighted from a cab. Why ar? Different culture causes different expectation lor.
I have few friends in HK driving taxi, they earn HK$12000 in average (approx SG$2400) which falls within the poor-man cat. However the $12000 is net after installment, diesel, carpark, maintenance, accident... etc. Eight years later, they are gonna have several millions dollar in bank if they decided to let go the license.
Baggage surcharge is counted by unit of bag/plastic bag/case etc. E.g aunti from supermarket, haha 10 plastic bags then need to pay 10x$5.
Animal includes birds and chicks. In Yuen Long a woman load a cage of chicks into taxi when arrive counted 120 (if I remember correctly) chicks inside then by law must pay 120x$5. At the time this news on paper was 15 years ago at that time animal $3.
LTA : Control number of taxi on the road - up to 15,000. Reduce ERP rate for taxi - 50% of private car.
Simplify Meter fare : $5, every 250m 20 cts 0000-0600 hrs - 50% Calls : $3, (0100-0500 hrs - $1) Airport surcharge : $5 (all times) CBD Surcharge : $3 (3pm to 12 am) Animals : $5 per animal. Vomit in cab : $50
Rules : No waiting for > 10 minutes,No obligation to help load or unload baggages,No loud music, No eating/drinking,No kissing,No making love in cab.....
$10/- flag down fare will make lazy buggers walk short distances... and those carrying shopping loads justifiably pay the higher fare.
Because our taxi meter is a joke currently . Too cheap ! All because of LTA .
Imagine 4 adults paying 6 dollars. We are earning less than macdonalds soon enough.
1st world but 3rd world taxi rates ! Higher flag down rate will ensure that stupid passengers will not hoard taxis during peak time and while taxi drivers suffer from lack of earnings.
$16 flag down rate will ensure that such people will stay away !
1)Compensate those that run out of city. 2)Ensure that correct pricing excludes problematic pax 3)That cabbies will pick from anywhere, everywhere and anytime.
Wish everyone drives a SMRT Chrysler. And phrase out those sampan crowns.
Everyone should driver a Chrysler and tekan all those idiot passengers !
