Wanton Mee 'packs a punch' - soShiok

Singapore, June 7, 2009

Review by reader Derek Tan:

Eng's Char Siew Wanton Mee
#B1-02 Dunman Road Hawker Centre

As I put the first morsel of noodles into my mouth, sweat beads start to break out on my forehead and neck. This humble looking plate of wanton mee, one of Singapore's perennial favourites packs a mean punch! Read on to find out what draws people back time and again despite subjecting their palates to the incredibly spicy chilli sauce.

His noodles are of the perfect consistency, not too dry yet not too soggy, not too chewy but with just the right amount of spring in each bite. It takes a high level of skill to achieve this texture plate after plates of noodles dished out. The wantons are tiny but I love the each bite because the skin is silky soft, yet doesn't break apart easily. The savoury taste of the pork inside is really fragrant and combined with the spicy noodles, it just makes you crave another bite. Before you know it, you would have run out of noodles. Do not stinge on your tissue packs here because you literally "work" hard for this delicious plate of chow!

The only let down is the measly pieces of char siew, which is nothing outstanding. However, the main draw of wanton mee is the noodles, the chilli sauce and the wantons. Eng gets this right down to perfection!

It is no doubt that Eng's wanton mee has followed me through my childhood and till today, it has not disappointed. Just be prepared to queue for 1/2 hr!

I've tried Eng's, pretty good. Quite similar to Fei Fei in Joo Chiat Place.

Others worth trying in order of preference:-

1. Kampoong Arang Blk 10 if I remeber correctly. Both noodle and wanton are excellent. I love soup with the ikan bilis flavour meaning no or less MSG. The Coffee Shop also sells Tanjong Rhu Pao. Too bad they have limited seats.
2. Tembeling Road - Patronize be Gerard Ee(NKF Chairman) - Noodles has nice texture and soup stock is great, full of ikan bilis flavor NOT MSG.
3. Telok Blangah Drive Food Center. Chewy noodle and Good Char Siew, However, Wanton Skin too thick.
4. Koung's Wanton Noodle - Geylang Lor 13, Use to be my favs but noodle standard has drop liao. Order with Yao Choi(Vegetable in Oyster Sauce), Otah and Yu Sheng(Raw Fish). Raw Fish salad is out of this world.
5. East Coast Lagoon Food Center - Noodles ok, I like the Charred Char Siew.
6. Airport Road Food Center - Ok...can do better.
7. Bamboo Noodle house - Junction of Koon Seng and Joo Chiat Road. Very unique noodle. Also recommend the fried version.

Bon Appetit!
