Truck driver jailed over fatal hit-and-run accident

A truck driver was jailed for seven weeks on Monday over a hit-and-run accident that left a cyclist dead.

Chinese national Sun Xiangjian ran over the victim after failing to keep a proper lookout at a roundabout.

Instead of stopping to help, he drove off as the cyclist lay dying.

On Monday, Sun was handed the jail sentence and a five-year driving ban after pleading guilty to causing death by negligence and failing to render assistance at the scene of an accident.

The court heard that the 37-year-old was driving from a construction site in his company's tipper truck when the accident happened last November.

When he got to the roundabout on Fort Road, he failed to see Chinese national Li Jinwei cycling ahead.

The front left part of his truck hit the 46-year-old victim, who fell off his bicycle and was run over, Deputy Public Prosecutor Vikneswaran Kumaran told the court.

Mr Li suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene 20 minutes later.

Dad and son hog bus lane every morning -- without a care for honking vehicles
dad_and_son_hog_bus_lane_every_morning-thumbnail.jpg

STOMPer Jeremy has been seeing this father and son duo cycling on a bus lane along Upper Bukit Timah Road every morning without a care for vehicles honking at them amid the busy traffic.

He said: "Almost every morning between 7 - 7.30AM where traffic is building up, along Upper Bukit Timah Road there would be two cyclists who I believe to befatherandson.

"Thefatherwill always be riding without his top, and instead of a single file they would always cycle side by side taking up the entire bus lane.

"Buses or cars usually will give a light honk at them but to no avail as they don't usually care, they will just continue side by side as though as they were in the park.

"Vehicles behind will have no choice but to change lane just to avoid them."

Photos 1 to 13 show the father and son pair cycling on the bus lane. The rest of the gallery shows other cyclists on the road, behaving recklessly or violently.

The STOMPer wrote: "Hi, I wish to submit this video clip attached taken from the camera in my car at junction of Tampines Avenue 10

and Avenue 9 on Feb 12 at around 7.10pm. "A Comfort taxi just sped through the traffic junction while it was still red and disappeared

within seconds. "It looks like it must have passed at about 90km/h. "If there was another vehicle turning out from Avenue 9 to Avenue 10,

there could have been a serious accident. "The government talks a lot about a world class transport system here but some people here
