SINGAPORE: An SBS Transit bus collided into a trailer and two taxis along Commonwealth Avenue on Thursday, after the bus driver at the wheel suffered a suspected cardiac arrest.

Bus Service No. 100 crashed into the trailer and two cabs at a taxi stand near the Commonwealth MRT Station.

The bus driver was rushed to the nearby National University Hospital.

Two members of the public rendered assistance by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the bus driver before the ambulance arrived.

The driver, who is in his 60s, was later revived by paramedics and is now conscious.

SBS Transit said in a statement that no one else was injured.

The trailer driver, who did not want to be named, said there were more than 10 passengers onboard the bus.

All looked shocked, and some were in tears.

But there were also those who sprang into action.

"A passenger was holding the steering wheel. I couldn't get onto the bus because the front door was closed, and the door in the middle was spoilt. When the bus mounted the curb, that's when it stopped. Then I ran in and pulled the handbrake," said an eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous.

SBS Transit said there were eight passengers onboard the bus at the time of the accident.

They were transferred to the next bus to continue on their journey.

The bus driver is still in hospital and an SBS Transit spokesperson says he's being monitored by the doctors, and he had no known heart conditions.
