SINGAPORE: Singaporeans and permanent residents will soon be able to visit national museums and heritage institutions for free, all year round.

Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong made the announcement during the debate on the Ministry's budget in Parliament on Friday.

The free admission, which starts from 18 May, does not include special exhibitions with external partners that are not about the National Collection.

Mr Wong said: "We will start from the 18th of May, with the launch of this year's Children's Season at the museums. I think it's a fitting day to start free entry because 18 May also happens to be International Museum Day."

Surveys show three in four Singaporeans agree that participating in heritage activities and visiting museums will help them develop a greater sense of belonging to Singapore.

However, only one in five Singaporeans actually visited local museums and heritage institutions.

Mr Wong hopes this move will encourage more Singaporeans to visit the museums and heritage institutions.

The free entry will apply to the following museums and heritage institutions:

National Museums -

  • Singapore Art Museum
  • National Museum of Singapore
  • Asian Civilisations Museum
  • The Peranakan Museum
  • Singapore Philatelic Museum
  • National Art Gallery (slated to open in 2015)

Heritage Institutions -
Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall
  • Malay Heritage Centre
  • Indian Heritage Centre (slated to open in 2015)

Interpretative Centre -
Reflections at Bukit Chandu
