Current bus services serve diverse needs of commuters: SMRT
I REFER to the letter,'Buck Up, SMRT'(ST Online Forum, June 4) by Mr Vincent Kessler on SMRT bus services.

SMRT Buses operates a fleet of over 860 buses. Besides trunk, feeder and intra-town services, SMRT also operates Premium Bus Services which offers residents living in areas such as River Valley, Pasir Ris and Geylang Bahru comfortable, fast and direct connections to their workplace in the Central Business District.

For residents living in areas such as Yishun, Sembawang and Bukit Batok who are out late on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of public holidays, SMRT operates NightRider Services, providing them with safe and affordable alternative transport.

We would also like to share that we operate SMRT Link, the first regular free shuttle service by a public transport operator. SMRT Link services, which run on weekends and public holidays from Dhoby Ghaut and Outram Park MRT stations, make it cheaper and more convenient for commuters to travel to Chinatown and Little India.

now smrt & cdge are introducing more premium bus service...these are our real competitors...yet both coys are also taxis rental coys

its a feeling that these coys are still enjoying comfortable rentals from taxi drivers since more & moreVL are issued whilst our paxs are getting lesser & lesser

how then can we counter such competitions?...or resign to our fate liaoweirdfaceweirdface

The reason I can think of why the 2 major Taxi Operators (SMRT & CDGE)are doing this is possibly because its so difficult to find taxi drivers to take up the many available taxis lying in the compound. Besides with the recentfare increase, I am sure we have lost many passengers to the buses and MRT. So in order to win back some passengers, they have no choice but to be innovative and provide premium service. But come to think of it, it would not be possible for the premium bus service to take over the taxi completely. We will see more short trips instead.smile

the reason of many available taxis lying in the courtyard is the fact that many gave up driving a cab due to the small pie since the big pie have been taken away by buses

and when we talk about buses we're not talking about the regular buses with proper designated routes & bus stops...here i'm saying these premiums & mini buses can stop & pick up paxs anywhere on the roads & even to the private condominiums

i want to provide premium service but i can only do so with the small pie left...
worst now there's no control by Lauya Transport Autho on school & non-school buses e.g. Woodlands Transport plying during peak period

so we now see everyday long queues of taxis at hotels & shopping malls where these buses dont go in since not many paxs on the road

i do hope bros like bro camry put his energy to voice taxis displeasure on buses rather than owning a personal taxi...if we've many paxs on the road our income will improve thus no need to own a taxi...let this be our topic to discuss on 15th when STC bros meetsmile
