Bros,

This evening I was waiting for the lights to turn green at the junction of cross street and south bridge road when a few construction workers walk towards my cab, they wanted to take my cab as 1 of them was injured with a bandage around his right hand. I straight away told them that I cannot pick them up, and than someone that looks like their supervisor also came to my cab and ask me to take his worker to raffles hospital, I also told him straight in the face that if I take him, I might get fine by LTA as this incident of the pregnant woman is still fresh in my mind. The guy after hearing this, shows a bo bian look and just walk away.
I notice some of the drivers in cars nearby start pointing fingers, and discussing.

Up in my mind I was thinking, if I pick the fellow up, it is a clear violation of LTA no pickup of passengers in CBD rules, and no pickup of passengers at traffic lights junctions. This is a fine too large for me and also consider the points that will be slap on me...

Thus, my decission to reject picking them up.

I am wondering if this happens to any of the bros here, what will you do? Those workers are LTA contractors working along the construction sites at cross street.

difficult decision...its between the devil & the deep blue sea

my decision would be this...if anyone is injured & need a cab irrespective of the penalties... i'll take...afterall someone is in pain...shd i be penalised i'll definately appeal in good faith...and hope for a pardon...if not let the whole sillyporean know...my heart will feel good at the end of the day that i've save someone in pain

hope i did not dent your feeling browink.gif

No problem bro. that guy has already been given first aid by his fellow workers, just trying to get a cab to hospital. they could have called an ambulance or even used their own site vehicles.

As long there's no life in danger, i will not take.
If a cat, dog, rabbit, bird, human, ah kong, ah ma, ah soh, ah cek, ah dee, mei mei, their life in danger, i take.
If not, NO.
It's not the fine and demerit point that makes me reject them but some dumb ass will definitely in one corner take pic of them getting into my cab saying that i break the rule and deserve to be punish.
So what i can appeal and get the summon acquitted, the time, hassle and the PAIN incur in me is farking PRICELESS.....

Bro moshi2, no need kay po tell them wat to do lah, we cabbies in the public eye are stupid, if they need our advise, they will be more dumb than stupid.
They know they can call ambulance, but take taxi much cheaper, that's how smart they are.

A taxi driver was disappointed that his kind deed in helping to pick up a heavily pregnant woman cost him a booking, when he apparently picked her up at a non-pickup point in the CBD area.

He said:

"I was in the Chinatown area at about 3pm on May 2 when a heavily pregnant woman, who was due in a about 10 days' time, hailed for my cab at the junction of Temple Street and New Bridge Road."

He said he did not pick her up from a taxi stand.

Said the taxi driver:

"The woman said she was in pain and needed to go to KK hospital urgently, so I decided to help and pick her up."

According to the taxi driver, he saw what seemed to be a traffic officer on motorcycle following him along Outram Road, but the officer made a U-Turn after that.

He said nearly two months later, he received a letter from the LTA, and realised that he had been booked for picking up the pregnant woman.

The driver said that the reason why the letter reached him late because the address written on the letter was wrong and that there was 'no such address in Singapore'.

He said he got the contact details of the pregnant woman and appealed to the LTA, explaining that he took pity on the heavily pregant woman and so stopped for her.

However, his appeal was rejected, he said.

When he pointed out the mistake in the address sent out by LTA, he said he was ignored.

STOMP is contacting LTA for comment.

Pregnant woman was not in pain, she was on her way to a check-up, says LTA
The LTA gave their response, after a taxi driver wrote in to STOMP saying that his kind deed in helping to pick up a heavily pregnant woman cost him a booking.

He had apparently picked her up at a non-pickup point in the CBD area.

The incident happened on May 2 2008, when a pregnant woman hailed for a cab at the junction of Temple Street and New Bridge Road.

The taxi driver claimed that 'she said she was in pain and needed to go to KK hospital urgently'. So he decided to help and pick her up even though she was not at a taxi stand.

According to the LTA spokesperson, the pregnant passenger was actually taking the taxi to Thomson Medical Centre for a check-up.

Furthermore, the taxi driver had also flouted CBD rules when he dropped off his previous passenger at New Bridge Road.

This is the LTA's full email:

"The CBD taxi rule was implemented on March 1 2008 and taxi drivers have been reminded not to pick up or drop off passengers along roads within the CBD where buses are plying between 7am and 10pm from Monday to Saturday, excluding public holidays.

"On May 2 2008 the taxi driver was spotted dropping off a passenger along New Bridge Road and immediately picking up the pregnant lady and her companion.

"Even if one were to overlook this second infraction as a kind act during an emergency, the taxi driver had already flouted the CBD rule when he alighted the first passenger.

"In addition, the taxi driver’s claim that his passenger was in pain and needed to be urgently conveyed to KK
Hospital was not true.

"Our check with the passenger revealed that she was taking the taxi to Thomson Medical Centre for a check-up.

"A Notice of Traffic Offence (NTO) was issued to the taxi driver on June 24 2008 for the offence of “Taking up/setting down passenger at unauthorized place”, which he had received within 3 days.

"Processing of the NTO requires time as we need to obtain the particulars of the driver of the taxi at the time of offence from the taxi company before we could issue the notice to the offender.

"We noted that there was an error in one of the words of the taxi driver’s address, due to the mis-interpretation of the abbreviation “GR”.

"We acknowledge that it was an oversight on our part. Nevertheless, with the correct postal code and other information in the address, both the NTO and the letter had reached him on time.

"The LTA considers appeals based on the merits of each case.

"Whilst we are open to consider appeals, we also have to balance such appeals against the facts.

"In this case, after having carefully considered the appeal and the facts of the case, we informed the taxi driver that we were unable to accept his explanation or waive the composition fine and demerit points.
However, we had allowed him more time to compound the offence.

"We thank your reader for the opportunity to clarify."

The bottom line is to play by their rules, no pick uor drop off at unauthorised locations within CBD. No matter what the reason. If pax complain, just tell them to complain to LTA. Not my problem. In fact I have avoided the CBD as much as I can. So many CB gament slave inside trying to catch cabbies, and turning blind eyes to pte cars breaking the rules... if they don't welcome us in the CBD, then they will not see me there...

That almost always happen in CBD, call and board another cab that happen to pass by, for me I usually switch to busy and just pick up anyone at taxi stand, if after 1 or 2 round still no pax, I will just leave the CBd and find greener safer pasture....
