A STOMPer wrote in to express dissatisfaction with cab drivers, whom the former feels deliberately drive slowly to earn a quick buck.

Ashley wrote, in the email sent to STOMP:

"Personally I would like to share some thoughts on the ethics of taxi drivers.

"I'm really not sure if I am the only one experiencing this frustration, but I believe any drivers or passengers who have eyes to see will be able to observe that taxi drivers are increasingly becoming very unethical by their super slow driving.

"What's the rationale? I heard from a taxi driver six months back and he shared with me on the different ways a taxi driver can earn more... and one of the many ways is to drive slowly.

"In this way, the metre will chalk up more and they earn more.

"But of course, not all taxi drivers do this.

"However, especially after the increase in rates of taxi meters from 10cents to 20cents per jump, I have noticed that more and more taxi drivers are driving super slowly.

"And this is gettting frustrating especially when we are rushing for time to get to work or in times of emergencies.

"Just how slow is slow?

"It gets intolerable when taxi drivers purposely step on their brakes and slow down when there are traffic lights just to wait for light to change to red. And it is so obvious for passengers who are also drivers themselves.

"Also, I have seen big lorries which are initially is behind your taxi being driven at a fasterspeed than your taxi driver and ends up two - 3 cars ahead of you.
"Likewise, the road is clear and traffic is smooth. Yet, the taxi driver coasts at 60 or 70 or 80 km/h in the 3rd or 4th lane on an expressway.

"Another common scenario:you see that the traffic is clear, yet your taxi driver is like at least 100 metres away from the car in front. And then you start noticing that all cars are just "passing-by" you.
"And when confronted, the cabbies insist they are driving quickly!
"Personally, if I see that the taxi uncle is of old and feeble age, I am forgiving and wouldn't mind the slow speed.
"But it is really absurd when you see able uncles driving at such speed on purpose.

"All these are really intolerable.

"I feel these issues need to be addressed. Perhaps most passengers who take taxis don't have a driver's licence and so don't notice, but it is still unacceptable ethics.

"The bottom line is that it is not about the extra few dollars which they earn from us, but it is the time which is precious!"

Ignorant! Meter jump is based on distance and not time, unless the cab is stationary. The faster the pax get off the cab the better!

Drive fast they complain abt reckless driving, drive slow said cabby wanna make extra fares. Where the heck did this 'ASS' cab driver heard from that driving slow meter jump faster ???furious.gif

This is the defination of a cheapskate with no money but want personalised comfirtable ride.

Dear passengers, if you want cheap transport, go and follow the advice from your government, TAKE THE DAMN BUS OR MRT! We cabbies are not interested in quantity. Get that into your dumb thick skull.

Go by Highway afraid to pay too much, but go by trunk roads with many traffic lights they said we go too slow want to earn quick buck. If we go pass a traffic light camera that's 12 demerit points and $120 fine.


Come on driving is our rice bowl, we can't afford to get any form of demerit points

Taxi drivers dun have much ethics anyway. These people are scums of the society! They are unscrupulous. Look at the night scene in Shenton Way. Cabbies hiding and only re-appearing after they clinch a booking. So unethical. So I urge everyone to boycott taxis unless emergency. They will learn their lesson to behave and get their act together. Bunch of unethical blokes.

let them drive slower, see how they die of having less passengers. Nowadays, their trade is dying already! So many people are cramping in the buses and trains, their ricebowl cannot be filled to the brim these days! See how pathetic they are in the morning peak hours! Having to horn at pedestrians to ask them to take their cabs! How sad!! LOL

he MUST be the King of Cheapos...typical sillyporeans...they think we need such cheapos in our cabs...less pax but we want quality paxs not cheapos who grumble drive slow is wrong drive fast is wrong

people like BMW are real scums...cant afford BMW wan to have nick as BMW...most probably he's destined to take bus cant afford taxis...if we know who he is or dare to expose...u flag also dun stop for ufurious.giffurious.giffurious.gif

my taxi friend used to say that i drive too slow , but too me safety is more important. He said that time is money,we have to dispatch our pax soonest possible so that we can take new pax.
I always remember that we have to bear all consequences in event of accident and the law.
Pax will not f care what happen to you!!

I agree with you... I had one old pax who told me that the way I drive ..cannot earn a living...I drive too slow

He should see my avatar... hehehehee

There's a time for everything ..where speed is concern....it can mean live or dead on the road....

we are know that time is money.....drive smart n practice patience ..it pays off with great dividends.

You want fast sure, tell the government to increase our meter to jump faster and to increase the base cost of private car usage ! Then the roads will be better and congestion free ! Then one can enjoy the relative !
