Premium bus services riding high Yeo Ghim Lay Tue, Dec 09, 2008 The Straits Times
EVERY day, some 5,000 commuters thank their lucky stars for the premium bus services which take them between work and home with a minimum fuss.
For about a dollar more per trip than if they were to go on regular buses and trains, they get a comfortable seat on a smaller vehicle, endure fewer stops and do not need to transfer from one mode of transport to another.
One convert is Mr Ong Seng Hyen, 32, who used to take an hour to commute from his Serangoon Gardens home to his office in Shenton Way before he switched to a premium service early this year. ===========================000000000================== more premium buses will roll out...not only will cause more congestion on the road it'll also swallow more of taxi paxs

Transport companies SHOULD NOT be allowed to run both taxis and buses!!! Bus drivers are PAID a fixed amount of salary regardless business good or bad. On top of that, they enjoy medical leave, annual leave and so on. But taxi-drivers PAY the companies a fixed amount for rental, even if we are too sick to drive and we don't even get reimbursement of medical fees. KNNCCB.
It makes me really wonder what the Ministry of Transport is really doing and it seems that Minister Raymond Lim doesn't really knows his job function and that The People's Action Party members are just manipulating the people for their successful returns.
Singapore is a great country to live in but had to suffer under a greater influence governmental system.

I think there is a system where you can opt to become a fixed income taxi driver provided you meet certain criteria and there will be a rewards system if you meet it. Benefits are similar to employment but I am not sure of the basic salary.
dun think it involve MOT...it's the darn Public Transport Committee who approve the rolling of premium buses...wait till those bosses of premium buses make more $$ & add more to the road into each heartland estate...then we SUCK fingers
there're many hidden agendas behind the approval of premium buses
who cares whether cabby survive or not...why????....cabbies hv no unity thus no strength

I think the taxi companies are just cannibalising themselves. But it could be a good sign for those really serious about our trade. May the fittest survive. With less taxis on the road, the future looks more promising for our trade. Too many on the road is not a good sign. It shows how desperate the Authorities are in solving the needs of the commuters.
all i see is a bleak future...it was stated starting early next year the retrenchment exercise wld start across the board...automatic many will jump the next option to stay alive i.e. drive a cab
with all odds against present cabbies (including the drop of tourists)...yea the fittest will survive...fittest equates stress, hardship, endurance etc etc
but who should tell LTA to cap the total TVL allowable in a small island har?? WHO WHO WHO??

Bro, i think there won't be any limit of TVLs issued. Imagine the amount each person pays to take the taxi-course times the number of apllicants -- enough to buy many chia-hong-chu liao....
