A hassle to get errant cabbies probed

I AM very disappointed with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) over its management of feedback on taxi-service lapses.

It is clear that if taxi drivers display "TAXI" on their rooftop signs, they should be prepared to take a commuter anywhere.

However, many cabbies do not do so. They ask those who flag them down for the destination, and turn away the fare if he or she is going somewhere which is inconvenient for them.

First of all, commuters are inconvenienced by taxi drivers who pick and choose where they want to go.

If they had turned on the "BUSY" sign, commuters would not have flagged them down and could have focused on looking out for available cabs.

I have encountered such behaviour and had written to the LTA to report the errant drivers.

Last Christmas, I wrote to LTA about two such cabbies, but LTA said it would proceed to investigate the case only if I made a trip to its office in Sin Ming Drive, which is out of the way for me.

According to LTA, this is so that I could be interviewed about the report and sign the report document. LTA would then investigate the complaint.

I stressed that letters and e-mail could serve as reports, but to no avail.

This hassle, I believe, is why errant taxi drivers continue to flout the rules, because they know that people who want to lodge a genuine complaint against them would give up because of the trouble involved.

another sillyporean on cabby bashing especially by this same Mr Sabastian Tan:-

Penalise bad cabbies' companies
Mon, Mar 02, 2009
my paper

I REFER to the letter, 'A hassle to get errant cabbies probed' (my paper, Feb 25).

Among the complaints made by the writer about errant taxi drivers was that some cabbies pick and choose passengers, depending on whether their destinations suit the drivers' convenience.

Following the example of other public-transport providers, taxi companies should inculcate a customer-oriented mindset in their drivers.

Enforcement officers engaged by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) should be deployed regularly to ensure that taxi drivers do not flout the rules.

Cabbies caught breaking the rules should be given summonses.

Instead of waiting for the public to report errant drivers, taxi companies should nip the problem in the bud by putting in place strong deterrents to prevent misconduct among cabbies.

The LTA should be concerned with the direction in which the taxi industry is heading.

As it can fine train operators for service disruptions, it may want to consider taking taxi companies to task for poor service from their drivers.

It is imperative that something be done to address this sorry state of affairs.

Media reports show that the number of service lapses by taxi drivers has increased.

Singapore is beginning to chalk up quite a reputation for bad taxi service.

Mr Sebastian Tan

This Raymund must really hate taxi drivers found this when I was doing a search on his name.

Making a mockery of bus lanes
11:56 AM February 16, 2009
Letter from Raymund Koh Joo Guan
The whole-day bus lanes, effective from 7am to 8pm daily, drew a lot of attention when they took effect. Enforcement was very intense then.

However, this is no longer the case as many taxi drivers make a mockery of the law by queuing daily between 6.30pm and 8pm on bus lanes all over Orchard Road.
The taxi queue at Lucky Plaza along Orchard Road extends to the bus stop at Tang's Shopping Centre daily from 6.30pm onwards. Public service buses have to wait for other motorists to give way to them in order to exit the bus bay.

The taxi queue at Centrepoint also extends illegally to Peranakan Place. The stretch of Orchard Road outside Peranakan Place is clearly demarcated by double yellow zig-zag lines, which denote it is a no stopping, no waiting and no parking zone. Besides, the entire left lane is a whole-day bus lane.

Where is the enforcement against bus lane violators? Have the double yellow zigzag lines become a blind spot already?
