Another cabby cheats?

Cabby takes longer route, then shouts Hokkien vulgarities at passengers

According to STOMPer Joseph, this taxi driver took a longer route from Chinatown to Bukit Panjang. When asked what route he was taking, the taxi driver even shouted Hokkien vulgarities at the shocked STOMPer.

In an email to STOMP today (April 2), the STOMPer says:

¡°My family and I boarded this taxi at Chinatown OG and headed towards Bukit Panjang.

¡°The whole journey was $30 plus but what's more important is the service attitude of the taxi driver, Yeo See Chiah.

¡°The taxi driver made the journey to Tiong Bahru, then make a big turn to Bukit Timah Road, then travelled to Clementi Road, and then went to Bukit Panjang from there.

¡°When he reached Tiong Bahru, I was just curious about which route he was taking, so I made a friendly approach to ask him. He raised his voice and said that I was accusing him of taking a longer route to earn more money.

¡°As I did not want to aggravate the situation, I answered him in a friendly manner and calmly told him not to be so defensive.

¡°He raised his voice even louder and told me not to speak English to him as he did not understand.

¡°I took out my handphone and then captured his car plate number. He shouted at me and then dared me to go to the police station with him. He even said that he was not afraid to lose his job because he didn¡¯t need it anyway.

¡°Upon reaching my destination, he tried to make the situation worse by asking me if he were to go by PIE, would it cost so much?

¡°I bet anyone who has taken a taxi from Chinatown back to Bukit Panjang will know that $30 is way too much. I replied him by telling him that it would have been much cheaper if he were to go by PIE.

¡°He then raised his voice and shouted back at my mum who just asked him for a receipt.

¡°When we reached our destination, we asked for a receipt but he said that his machine was unable to produce the receipt, so he charged us just $20. It is obvious he doesn't want to produce the receipt as a proof of the $30+ charge.

¡°The tension between the taxi driver and us was very strong and then he scolded us some Hokkien vulgarities before driving off.

¡°His attitude and service is totally unacceptable. We will take action against this driver.¡±

Was that Cheating ??? I have taken this same route if the pax dont tell me their prefered route. when pax ask the route you are taking , tell them honestly and why you are taking that route..If pax is agreeable OK. If not they must tell us which way they want to go by.

That cabby needs lessons in customer service , it can go a long way to earning more and make taxi driving less stressful.

Just for analysis.

$30 could include CBD $3 surcharge, peak hour and traffic jam.

Going by Tiong Bahru, he could have taken commonwealth avenue then clementi road which can be quite packed especially at the sunset way stretch.

TD may have originally intended to go by Chin Swee followed by AYE then changed his mind and go by Tiong Bahru and the above route instead.

Anyway, this is just the Stomper side of the story, we do not have the TD version yet.

Moral of the story:- Unless it is a No Brainer route. It is always good to ask Pax the preferred route to take to avoid any dispute.

Cheers.

The details of this incident are not clearly and fully furnished by the stomper.
Exact boarding location and time are not mentioned.
Time of trip is critical in such a complaint as it does make quite a difference.
If it is during peak hours, we have to factor in CBD and peak hour surcharges.
If so, $30 for the trip does not differ much. But if during off-peak, then it's exorbitant.
Another point is the stomper mentioned Tiong Bahru, then make a big turn to Bukit Timah.
But what are the exact routes, it's also not mentioned. What exactly is ' a big turn'?

For the benefit of sharing of pointers, the route I'll take from Chination to Bt Panjang will be:
Head towards Zion Road and from there it's either Grange RD > Cluny Rd > Bt Timah or
straight down to Stevens Rd > PIE.
I'll let pax choose the route he preferred.

OG to bukit panjang, this 100 % must ask pax for preferred route if not, even if u take shortest route he will think u go 1 BIG ROUND.

Always ask for preferred route, it will save u headaches
