Interesting and informative topic here. Thanks.

Ever heard old birds talk about Yiu Chu Kang/Lim Chu Kang etc. Writing on paper or spell out may solve most doubts but IMO sometimes need to ask pax "near where?".

I had pax duno exactly the destination was, he just say GO SERAYA. Searching my map came out 3 different area: Jurong Island, Upper Thomson, and, Haig Road. Which one you go? He said he duno... alama... how? Then I remember during LTA excursion I'd been told always ask pax "near where?" I asked him "near where? got any building name or landmark?" He said, last time went there from AMK MRT is very near... Then is confirmed Upper Thomson.

Seraya Cre - off U Thomson Rd (roti pata shops)
Seraya Lane - off Haig Rd
Seraya Rd - off Haig Rd
Seraya Rd - Jurong Island
Seraya Place - Jurong Island
Seraya Jetty Rd - Jurong Island
Seraya Ave - Jurong Island

As both are young Japanese. I thought their English is beri powderful.
When they said they want to go to "Chinese restaurant". They pronoun "restaurant" correctly.
But CHIJMES they pronoun as CHIJ MES. Sound like Chin ese. So "Chinese restaurant".

Another incident also Japanese pax.......their "Moulmein Sue aunt" is "Mohamed Sultan".
Moulmein pronunciation was perfect. I thought is some new condo at Moulmein.
Luckily I ask them near where? They said near Clarke Quay.

the main point is dun encourage to translate our heritage to China language...why should we??

Indians, thais, vietnamese, indonesia, japan, cambodians, etc have tried to pronounce our road names which can be understood even with their slang...

so please dun convert geylang to their lingono

Eg. 1 ...zhi xin guan.

Is good to know more languages. But some time need to act blurr.
Once ,policeman flagged me along Orchard road with two Taiwanese beside him.
Show me name card in Chinese. I said no problem, confirm destination n proceed.
So happy everywhere long Q of taxis. This case no need to Q .

They said they join taxi Q but taxi drivers don't know their destination so ask police for help.
Ha ha was thinking maybe they don't want to go because....

Reach destination got $10 tip... more than the fare.

It's not their lingo bro fairfare, it's the chinese names of places use in our local chinese papers.
And I want my future children to know them too cos we are still chinese afterall.
As 4 the older dialect names, it's for the older generation who had sweat for this tiny island.
Getting them to places by e old names they know, that's e least I can do.
It's never too late to learn bro.
