Gamin Mapsource for your Windows PC

Hi, if you are new in this trade and wish to enhance your route knowledge while you're free at home then this tool is absolutely useful to you.

What is Mapsource?

In short, a software operates under Windows platform allows users to manipulate map data between PC and Garmin GPS device.

Garmin requires that users use MapSource to upload maps and POI's (points of interest) to their Garmin gps units. Users can plan routes using Mapsource and upload to the GPS if required. Some Garmin units support TRACKING, when on the road, users can save tracks and download to the desktop PC for evaluation or mapping purpose.

We may expedite our knowledge level if we regularly explore feasible routes through route planning (a built-in Mapsource feature). However, routes suggested by computer usually not passengers' preferred route so please take it as a reference backup. Do post your questions and let oldbirds ease your doubt.

Maps Sets

There are plenty maps available FOC for individual country but commercial maps are chargeable. Community supporting free Singapore maps for Garmin are Malfreemaps (maps are unlocked) and Malsingmaps (latest map is locked require unlock key).

How to install Garmin Mapsource? Go here -> malfreemaps.com and follow steps.

Install MFM free map (Singapore, Malasysia and partial Thailand) and check/update your map set every few months.

P.S. I shall try to post example and screen shots if necessary. Enjoy.

Plugged in the USB cable from GPS to PC, but nothing detected.

How to make the GPS detected by the PC?

Wah so touching clip eyepopping.gif Thanks bro RD.

Yesterday was my cake.gif being a baby TU on the road for a full year.

Tears, bitter & sorrow accompanied me inside a 15 sq ft' dog cage during initial months but now this cage is broken free from bondage and I've found joy and happiness after meeting you guys here. Big thanks come out to all lovely bros, bcos of you I regain my confidence and self esteem. I have been set..... F.....R...EEEEEEEEEEEE.

I've been playing with few tools everyday during first 6 months, now is much much lesser but I still wish to let newcomers know that there are tools and here STC is source of knowledge and friendship they can find anytime.

Seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened, ask and you'll be given.

Bro Ace, you don't need to have Garmin device to run Mapsource unless you want to upload/download data.

You don't need to install Garmin USB driver, it is for win98 only if it is installed u need to uninstall it. After all, in Mapsource pull down menu "Utilities"->"Get Unit ID" your device ID will be listed.

Getting Started Quick Guide

1. Use binocular icon, locate waypoint, e.g. Bukit Pajang Plaza

1.jpg

2. Click on Make Waypoint, store it under relevant category e.g. Shopping Centre (you need to create it)

3. Locate and create other waypoints as you wish. All waypoints will be displayed on the LHS Panel.

2.jpg

4. From the panel shown above, point to a specific waypoint, e.g. Bukit Panjang Plaza, right click -> "Select Route Using Selected Waypoint". The next dialogue comes out.

3.jpg

Now Bukit Panjang Plaza is selected as Starting point. Click Insert Waypoint button to insert ending point, e.g. MRT Boon Lay.

Click OK. The route will be calculated.

5. Before we can evaluate the computed route, please check if your Preference is set according to your own preference. To me I prefer the following:

4.jpg

The route suggested takes JTownHall->BoonLayWay which is not Taxi Uncle's preferred route because too many traffic smile.gif

We can do something to reroute it, click on Binocular icon inside Route Properties Dialogue, i.e. "Find and Insert Place" as mid point and of course we can insert several pts if we wish.

I prefer "go by" Jalan Boon Lay, so I find and added a single point - Jalan Boon Lay as "pass-by point". The result I quite like it. 13mins 12.8km not bad.
