Singapore, December 31, 2012
The newly refurbished markets and food centres at Block 85 Bedok North Street 4, and Blocks 2 and 3 Changi Village Road will reopen for business tomorrow.
Business will resume progressively as stalls complete their renovation works.
The two centres underwent ten months of upgrading, costing $5.2 million to renovate the food centre at Bedok and $4.8 million for the two blocks at Changi Village Road.
Seating capacity of both centres has increased by 32 per cent at Bedok and up to 100 per cent more at Block 3 Changi Village Road.
Improvements have also been made to the ventilation within the centres as all cooked food stalls are now equipped with new mechanically exhaust systems.
All stalls have been reconfigured and passageways widened. Space has also been set aside within the upgraded centres to support implementation of tray-return in the future.
Toilets have also been renovated and are more family-friendly, with handicapped-friendly designs and diaper-changing counters.
The renovations at the two food centres are part of the Hawker Centres Upgrading Programme by the National Environment Agency (NEA). To date, 103 hawker centres have been upgraded under this programme.
