Dear Niteowl, just to give you a bit confidence. This cabby here walk in taka also can get lost, still lost her way till this date but has been driving teksi for a few months now.....i use the google map (old version) on my android and rely very heavily on it. I not shy to tell my pax i new and not familiar with the roads. They are more than happy to give you directions. Even if they give me directions, i still switch on the navigation cos many a times pax give u last min instructions, few will give you advance notice to turn. Usually i ask them for permission to punch in the destination, THEN i switch on the meter. he navi is especially useful during heavy rain when visibility is low, then you know when to exit the expressway.
Hope this helps. Jia You and drive safe!
Taxiuncle, thanks! I still got a long way to go, sign up for courses, pass the modules and OJT? lol looking forward to the day of passing and the chance to meet up some of you here ;)
Chiku jie, will you suggest using the MDT for maps? or hp? if use hp seems to drain batt and also disrupt taking or making calls? interesting part will be like how not to pay erp if going to wisma and ion.. lol
or will TDs suggest getting a brand new GPS? seems like a lot of TDs using GPS map leh
I started using MDT but MDT always hang, so not reliable.
Its true that u will get interrupted by calls if you use smartphone apps, so invest in GPS lor. I was told Garmin is the most widely used and its only about $100 nia. I dont have many calls, hence it doesnt bother me. Also for safety reasons, I dont take calls when driving unless from pax or family. I also will check the route given to have a rough idea so even if i have to take a call, i know when is the next turn especially if exiting from expressways. If its a complicated route, i wont take any calls. Safety first!
I suggest you get a cable for charging your mobile phone regardless. If you get a phone cable, you will need a multi adapter cos you need to plug in meter also.
There is an option on google maps to siam tolls on the routes and avoid expressways.
ION can siam ERP but Wisma no way to siam. And the reason you can siam ERP for ION is becos you cannot charge ERP. Wahahahahahaha!
Drive safe and stay healthy!

MDT Maps are quite laggy, but better than none. As a taxi driver, it is best that you buy a cigarette port car charger for your handphone.
I myself is using a Marbella GPS with built-in HD video recorder.
If you are going into wisma with empty cab, any route also need to pay. Ion is outside the gantry, so don't have $3 city surcharge.
