RE: acekang's blog

Picked up a pax around Serangoon Rd, wanted to go IRAS.....55 Newton Rd, I asked if it is called Revenue House, pax says no. Checked Street Directory cannot find IRAS building, and also cannot find blk 55.....As i approached the junction going to Revenue house, i asked pax if this is the one (Revenue House).......

Pax : IRAS Govt building u dunno where?
Me : I think Revenue house is the one.
Pax : This is not IRAS.

So continue to drive on towards Newton Rd.....but my instinct tells me to U-turn back to Revenue house....eventually when we reached Revenue house.

Pax : Here is Revenue house, i say go IRAS, why stop here?
Pax : You taxi driver dunno way!!!
Pax : Ok you wait here, i ask the security....

Pax alighted and asked the security....and confirmed it is IRAS.

Pax : Ok, how much?
Me : $6.
Pax : You see, you learn new things from me, IRAS is Revenue house!

Hmm.......lol....

5 oct 09 - 0724, got a pax from Marina Mandarin to T1, went by ECP, along the way, near bedok exit, saw the LED display "Accident at Ln 1 aft Bayshore". Upon approaching Bayshore, the traffic comes to a standstill, the traffic moved very slow, so slow that even walking speed would be much faster. Pax seems to be quite disturbed by the traffic hold up, eventually he heave a big SIGH and exclaimed I gonna be late for my flight!!! Pax requested to move to the leftmost lane, which seems to be moving alittle more. Just at this moment, we passed by the accident area, saw a crashed bike on the floor and a car, with police/ambulance on Ln 1. A sad feeling ran through me, thoughts left wondering how are the casualties....Putting all my thoughts aside, i focus in getting my pax on time for his flight.... Althought we passed the accident area and the traffic was smooth once again, but the cars are moving rather slowly, there was no chance for me to overtake, cars are travelling the same speed at about 70-80km/hr occupying all the possible lanes....I was at lane 1 signalling right to hint the car infront to either increase his speed or give way to me.....Finally after about 30 seconds, the car infront responded, and signal to the left and give way to me...Travelling within the safety speed limit, i did my best to help my pax get to T1 on time.
Help to take out the luggage from the boot while he went to get a trolley. His luggage is extremely heavy, it could have weighed about 40kg. Forgotten how much the fare was...but was given $1.20 tips.

By then it was 0750, so i am considering to join airport queue....as i felt my tummy ache, i decided to join the BT queue, as the next arrival time is 0830, I would have time to release my load off. The queue didnt move much, its like 1 or 2 little fish bites for about every 10-15mins. It was 0900h when i am on the 5th position of the queue.....2 fish bite and i managed to get to 3rd of the queue which is at the designated lot for pax. The guy who is 1st in queue was getting anxious and shaking his head, peak hr almost gone....time is 0915h.....just then a pax came walking towards the taxi. Pax wanted to take my taxi , i told him he should take the other taxi, then he told me NETS, and the 2 other taxi who are supposed to be infront of me doesnt have NETS, I feel bad that i get to "Jump their queue", if it is shopping centre, its still not so bad, airport queue for more than 1hr then cannot go, sometimes need to wait even longer, it is quite hard to imagine pax do not have enough cash to pay for taxi fare. So the pax got into my taxi.....bring me out of this dead zone(1hr25mins of waiting), guess where the destination....Tanah Merah MRT, somehow a sianz feeling got over me. 0916h towards Tanah Merah MRT, reached 0926h. While i take the NETS card from pax, i saw pax have more than sufficient cash to pay for this short distance trip. So I asked him, why you didnt want to pay by cash? He answered : I dont have to worry about tipping the taxi driver which i do not need to.....

Meter fare 6.60
Airport SC 3.00
Peak hr 35% 2.30
Nets charge 0.30
Total 12.20

What would u do if pax suddenly asked u to stop at the Bus stop along Cantonment Rd, near Lim Teck Kim Rd?

Bro Ace, if you look up at the junction of Cantonment Rd and Lim Teck Kim Rd, you'll see a 'NO STOPPING' sign. Should you stop for the pax? Who is going to pay for the fine if you happen to get a ticket for commiting the offence? Surely not the pax, right?

Sometimes in the midst of a traffic jam, even at places where u are not allowed to alight pax, even in the middle of the road, pax without your consentgive you the money indicated on the meter and left. You cannot control their sudden actions. But yet we Taxi drivers got to bear the consequences when pax do it their way.

Chatted with some TUs during the airport queue, one of the TUs said he got letter from LTA regarding pax alighting in inappropiate spots, when he explained pax did it on their own, yet he received a warning and told not to do it again.

Problems does not always lies with TUs, one of the major problem is letting the public knows about these rules. It would seems unfair to TUs if the offence is indirectly commited by pax.

And who is going to help educate pax.....posting decals on taxi, taxi stands, bus stops?

Started my day with a pax going to airport, drop off at T3 at 0740h, saw taxi information T1 have 9 arrivals, went to T1 to queue, queue isnt moving much, by the time its my turn to get pax, its already 0940h. It seems that pax know how to avoid peak hours, even their flight had arrived 1-2hrs ago....

Pax got in, going to Orchard Forum Shopping Centre. He did show me the sms on his handphone, 583, Orchard Forum Shopping Centre. Asked pax, is it Orchard Shopping centre, pax said yes. Used GPS and found Orchard Shopping Centre....told pax i would alight him at A11 Centre Point, he gotta cross the road to get to Orchard Shopping Centre. Went by PIE-Jurong exit Stevens...as the traffic condition is bad, i took out my street directory to take a look "Orchard Rd" , then i saw 583 Orchard is Forum Shopping Centre....almost went to the wrong one. Pax has black skin color, looks like from africa or america, strong build. When he saw i take out the street directory, he seems to be agitated and warned me not to bring him go circles. Stevens Rd>Scotts Rd>Orchard Boulevard>Tomlimson Rd>Orchard Rd>Crusaden Rd>Forum Shopping Centre(583 Orchard Rd). I hope i got it right....Fare 22.40, pax asked is it SGD or USD...i was laughing to myself(lol USD)....i replied SGD....and pax paid the fare.

Each time i went to airport to queue during peak hours, my income have dropped drastically, i wondered why so many other taxis can afford to queue....

Cruising along Syed Alwi Rd ard 1320h, at one of the Mustafa entrance, got a pax with a trolley full of stuffs flag my taxi. Stopped and helped her to load up her purchases to my boot. There are about 15-20 bags, taken like 3mins to finish loading. After we got into the taxi, asked her destination, she going Tanjong Rhu Rd. It started raining at this moment and traffic condition got worse.

As Tanjong Rhu Rd, was around the area where i lived,i did not ask pax go by which way, so being a smart ass, i turned left to Verdun Rd,wanted to go by Kitchener Rd>Serangoon Rd>Lavender St>Kallang Rd>Sims Ave>Sims Way>Mountbatten Rd>Fort Rd>Tanjong Rhu Rd.

Right after i turned into Verdun rd, pax pointed behind, seems like indicating going by that way, she asked which way i intended to go by, told her, and she say she wanted to go by ECP faster. So i took a right turn to Kitchener Rd>Jalan Besar>L to Syed Alwi>Jalan Sultan.

FIRST NEAR-ACCIDENT HAPPENED!
As Pax seems to be in a hurry, i am trying to get her to her destination within my best effort. Along Jalan Sultan Rd, there was a Van in the yellow box(positioned at the path of Lane 2, with its right signalling lights flashing, i was on lane 1. The Van wasn't moving as i approaches....At the moment that i almost past the Van, heard a loud "BANG" , my left mirror hit the side of the van. I thought my left mirror head broken, as the ears is closed, i dont see the mirror.

I stopped my taxi 10 metres away from the time of collision. The Van drove up to me, windows wind down, he knew i had the right of way, but he claimed he already signalled and yet i drove past. I wind down my windows and had a quick chat. I pushed the left mirror to its operating position. (This is the time i realise the mirror can be kept when not using)

At this moment, cars behind are horning non-stop. And it seems that there isnt any damage, so i dropped the case and proceed. Headed towards ECP, and dropped pax at her condo lobby, her maid came to help. I alight and went to check my left mirror, partial of the paintwork came off due to high speed abrasion, but nothing serious. Then I went to help unload the stuffs as well. After unloading, went back to my taxi. MDT message - You have rejected 1 job!!!! (Hmmm.....missed a call booking for being helpful) Thats what we get when we are being helpful.....Sob...sob....

As i drove out along the main road, near the bus stop, got a pax flag and went to Fullerton Hotel. After that got a pax going to Ibis hotel Bencoolen St, found it on GPS. Studied the Route by GPS, it wanted me to exit the CBD area, using Rochor Rd>Bencoolen St (about $2 ERP at this time). So I examined the other possible routes and decided to go into Waterloo St(near the Kwan Im Tong Hood Cho Temple Taxi Stand), took a left turn and went into Bencoolen Link then right and saw the Ibis hotel drop off point. Fare 4.80. Pax give me 7 and asked me keep the change. It lightens up my day.

Bro, if u want to play airport, learn to get the timings right.
Anyway, after losing several hours everytime u go there, u will roughly
know when to go and when not to go liao.
Take that as lesson fees lor....biggrinbiggrin

1). Mustafa to Tanjong Rhu, can go by Jln Sultan to Nicoll Highway> Stadium Rd, Stadium Dr, Stadium Cres> Tg Rhu.

2). If u don't want to get rejected jobs, don't switch-off meter while helping pax unloading.

GPS proposed this route, but since pax wanted to go by ECP- Pax is king. biggrin

Pax pay when reach destination. Then went down tounload, meter already stopped, so booking came in while i was helping to unload. Rejected job is nothing, just bad luck missed the booking. cry
Could setMDT to busy if dont want to have any rejected jobs.

Especially during peak hours......10.95 cents , my pax says 10.90 pls. He give me $10+90 cents. Nowadays, I usually give pax 5 cents discount during peak hours. When i just started, i give pax 5 cents coin change, they give me back (means i got 5 cents as tip biggrin)

Question : Do you give 5 cents discounts during peak hours or you give pax the exact change with the 1000x5cent coins u have prepared beforehand... biggrin

Today then found out front left door slightly dented from the previous collision with the van along Jalan Sultan....that explains the loud "bang".....

WRONG LOCATION

0900h, got a pax along east coast road, say going to Tanjong Pagar Post Office. I asked go by ECP, pax said ok. Upon passing Fort Rd exit, pax suddenly pointed behind, this time i heard she say Tanjong Katong Post Office, took the KPE>PIE-Paya Lebar and went to Tanjong Katong Post Office. Fare is 11.20, charged pax 6.00 and apologised, pax say sorry too.

2200h, picked up a pax at Esplanade Taxi stand, pax says going Kent Ridge Rd. Asked go by which way, answered any way. Took ECP > exit Bouna Vista..

Pax : Why did you come here?
Me : You said Kent Ridge Rd.
Pax : If you dunno the way, you should have told me earlier.
Pax : I said Cambridge Rd.
Me : Where is that?
Pax : It is somewhere near Novena MRT.
(I was like....did it take that long for pax to realise we are on the wrong track...)

Bouna Vista > AYE>CTE>Moulmein>Thomson>Owen>Cambridge Rd.
Fare 20.40 , told pax to pay what she normally pay. Pax paid 12.00(inclusive of 3.00 CBD sc)

I supposed such mistakes are quite common....and it should had happened to any TUs ever.

What would you do to ensure pax location is the same as what you thought?
